An empowerment strategy for female entrepreneurs in Masiphumelele informal settlement, Cape Town

Abstract

This research study aims to develop an empowerment strategy for female entrepreneurs from the Masiphumelele informal settlement in the Western Cape, South Africa. The study employed a qualitative, inductive approach and convenience sampling as its methodology. The sample comprised 17 female entrepreneurs residing in the Masiphumelele informal settlement in the Western Cape, South Africa. The primary data was collected using semi-structured interviews with the 17 female entrepreneurs, which explored their entrepreneurial experiences, challenges, utilisation of resources, and strategies. The study's findings emphasise the significance of providing focused assistance mechanisms, such as financial resources, mentorship programmes, and specialised training, specifically designed to address women entrepreneurs' unique requirements and difficulties in informal settlements. Furthermore, it emphasises the need for community cooperation and collaborating with local individuals and organisations to establish a long-lasting environment promoting women's economic empowerment in informal settlements. The study's policy recommendations suggest that government agencies, non-profit organisations, and private sector entities should collaborate to create comprehensive support programmes. These programmes should focus on bridging the gap in financial literacy, providing affordable credit options, offering mentorship opportunities, and creating networking platforms for female entrepreneurs in informal settlements. These policy ideas aim to promote equitable economic development and enhance the agency of female entrepreneurs in marginalised places such as Masiphumelele informal settlement in the Western Cape, South Africa.
